Bailiwick means a person's area of knowledge, authority, or responsibility. It is often used when talking about someone's job, skill, or special field. The word sounds slightly formal.

bailiwick はまず「自分の担当エリア・縄張り」として覚えると定着しやすい語です。学問なら field、仕事なら area of responsibility に近いですが、もっと「その人が仕切る範囲」という感覚があります。特に outside my bailiwick（私の専門外・担当外）で非常によく見かけるので、このかたまりで覚えるのが有効。specialty が単なる得意分野を指しやすいのに対し、bailiwick は権限・責任の及ぶ範囲まで含みやすい、やや硬めの語です。

It is close to `field`, but it often suggests not only knowledge, but also control or duty. That makes it sound a bit more formal than `specialty`.

bailiwick は bailiff と wick「区域」を合わせた中英語で、原義は「執行吏の管轄区」です。wick はラテン語 vicus「村・地区」につながり、wick や vicinity も同系。だから今の「専門分野」も、もとは自分の縄張りという感覚です。
Bailiwick came from Middle English and combines bailiff with wick, meaning an area or district. Wick is related to Latin vicus, "village" or "settlement," also seen in words like vicinity. At first it meant the district controlled by a bailiff, and later it grew into the more general sense of someone's own area of work or skill.
