A memoir is a book or written account about a person's own life and experiences. It usually focuses on important events, memories, or a particular period rather than the person's whole life. It is commonly used for personal stories written by real people.

memoir はまず memo や memory を思い出すと入りやすい語です。どちらも「覚えていること」を扱うので、memoir も「記憶をたどって書く本」とつなげると残ります。point は、事実を年代順に全部並べる記録ではなく、著者自身の体験や心に残った出来事に焦点があること。diary がその時々の日記、autobiography が人生全体の自伝なら、memoir は特定の時期や経験を振り返る回想録、という違いで覚えると混同しにくいです。

memoir の語源・成り立ち Etymology
memoir はフランス語 memoire を経て、ラテン語 memoria「記憶」にさかのぼる語です。語根 memor- は「覚えている」を表し、回想録が出来事の全記録でなく「心に残った記憶を書き留める本」だとわかります。関連語は memory と memorable です。
