1890年代の米俗語で、Hoochinoo（アラスカ先住民が作る酒）の短縮形です。Hoochinooはトリンギット系部族名Hutsnuwuに由来するとされ、固有名が鉱夫の間で「粗い強い酒」一般を指すようになりました。関連形は hootch、Hoochinoo。
