queueはフランス語 queue「尾」に由来し、さらにラテン語 cauda「しっぽ」へさかのぼる。人や物が後ろへ細長く伸びる様子を尾に見立てて「待ち行列」となり、cue や caudal にも同じ“尾”のイメージが残る。
