sustainability は sustain＋-ability。sustain はラテン語 sustinere「下から支えて保つ」にさかのぼり、sub「下から」＋ tenere「つかむ」が核なので、「支え続けられる性質」から「持続可能性」となった。関連語は sustenance, tenable。
