A complement is something that completes or improves something else by matching it well. It is used in general English for parts that go well together, and in grammar for a word or phrase that completes the meaning of another part of the sentence. Be careful not to confuse it with "compliment," which means praise.

まず complete を思い出すと覚えやすい語です。complement は「欠けた部分を足して全体をちょうど完成させるもの」。単独で強いというより、何かと組み合わさって価値を出す感覚が核です。a perfect complement to A や A and B complement each other の形で見ると定着しやすいです。文法の complement も、主語や目的語だけでは足りない情報を補って文を完成させるもの、とつなげると一本化できます。compliment（ほめ言葉）とのつづり違いには要注意です。

complement はラテン語 complementum「満たして完全にするもの」から来た語です。com-「すっかり」+ plere「満たす」で、欠けを埋めて全体を整えるのが本義。関連語は complete, supplement で、「ほめる」compliment と違い“埋める”感覚が核です。
Complement comes from Latin complementum, meaning "something that fills up or completes," from complere, "to fill up." The root idea is not praise but making something whole by supplying what is missing. That is why it is related to complete and also to supplement. Its history keeps the sense of filling a gap until a whole is complete.
