まず complementary は complement が土台だと押さえると覚えやすいです。complete に近い見た目どおり、「足りない部分を足して全体を成り立たせる」感覚があります。A and B are complementary なら、AだけでもBだけでも不十分で、一緒だとちょうどよく機能する関係です。complement each other も頻出。紛らわしいのは compliment「ほめ言葉」で、i になると意味がまったく変わるのでセットで区別すると定着します。

complementary はラテン語 complementum「満たすもの・補うもの」に由来し、com-「共に」+ plere「満たす」が核です。英語では complement + 形容詞語尾 -ary となり、「足りない所を埋めて全体を完成させる」ことから「補完的な」になりました。関連語は complement、complete。
