simulator はラテン語 simulare「似せる・まねる」に行為者語尾 -or が付いた形。simul- は「同じように」が核で、similar や simulate と同根なので、「本物そっくりに振る舞う装置」だと分かる。
Simulator comes from Latin simulare, meaning "to make like" or "to imitate," plus the ending -or for an agent or thing that does something. The root simul- carries the idea of likeness or sameness.
