子犬
解説 Definition
犬などの哺乳動物の幼い個体を指す言葉です。特に若い犬に用いられることが多く、まだ母親に依存した時期の子どもを意味します。愛情を込めて呼ぶことが多く、育児中の犬やその子どもたちに対して使われます。

pup は puppy の短縮形で、puppy は中世フランス語 poupée『人形・かわいい子』、さらにラテン語 pupa にさかのぼると考えられます。puppy や puppet も近い親類で、『小さく愛玩されるもの』という感覚が核にあるため、pup は“まだ幼い子犬”を自然に感じさせます。
