子犬

puppy は中英語 puppe / popi にさかのぼり、背景には古フランス語 poupée「人形、かわいい小さなもの」があるとされます。pup, puppet と関連し、『愛らしい小さなもの』という感覚から、子犬を呼ぶ語になったと考えると納得しやすいです。
