banker は bank + -er で、bank はフランス語を経てイタリア語 banca「長椅子・両替台」にさかのぼります。bankrupt も同じ banca に由来し、中世の金融業者が台や机で金を扱ったことを思うと、banker が本来は信用を机上で動かす人だったと見えてきます。
