bankrupt はイタリア語 banca rotta「壊れたベンチ・商売台」がフランス語経由で入った語。banca は「銀行・台」、rotta は「壊れた」で、両替商の台を壊して営業停止にしたイメージが「破産した」へつながる。bank や bench も同系。
Bankrupt came into English through French from Italian banca rotta, literally "broken bench" or "broken counter." Banca meant a money dealer's bench or table, and rotta meant "broken."
