解説 Definition
An open defensive slope that descends gently outward from a fortress. Its lack of cover makes approaching enemies easier for defenders to see.
Memory Tip
cross the exposed glacis、a fortress protected by a glacisという形を場面ごと固定しましょう。
Picture a fortress surrounded by a wide, gentle slope with no trees or rocks to hide behind. Imagine attackers having to 'cross the exposed glacis' while the defenders watch from the walls. Tie the word to this designed defensive slope.
例文
The soldiers had to cross the exposed glacis to reach the fort.
The fortress was protected by a wide glacis.
From the walls, the guards could see anyone approaching across the glacis.

Etymology
Borrowed from French glacis. In fortification terminology, it denotes an artificial slope descending outward in front of the defensive walls.
