樹木がほとんど生えず、草が広がる大きな平野のことです。特に北米のグレートプレーンズのような温帯の広大な草原を指すことが多く、熱帯で木が点在しやすい savanna とは区別されます。

prairie はフランス語 prairie「草原」から入り、さらに俗ラテン語 prataria、語根はラテン語 pratum「牧草地」です。フランス語 pré や prairial と並べると、ただの平地でなく、草が育ち家畜を養う土地という感覚が prairie に残っています。
Prairie came from French prairie, from a Vulgar Latin form based on Latin pratum, meaning "meadow" or "grassland." The word originally suggested land covered with grass, especially useful for grazing. That sense remained as it was used for the wide grasslands of North America.
