草原
解説 Definition
樹木がほとんどなく、主に草で覆われた広大な平原で、中央アジアや東欧の乾燥した地域に広く見られる地形です。降水量が少ないため耐乾性の強い草が広がり、夏と冬の寒暖差が大きいのが特徴です。遊牧民はこの地形を家畜の放牧地として利用し、地域の気候にも深く関わってきました。
A steppe is a large area of flat grassland with very few trees, usually in a dry climate. The word is often used in geography and history, especially for parts of Central Asia and Eastern Europe. It describes a natural landscape rather than farmland or forest.

steppe はロシア語 степь から入った語で、語源自体は不詳ですが、「木の少ない広大な平原」という感覚をそのまま運んでいます。接頭辞分解はなく、forest-steppe や steppe-like などを見ると、この語の芯が「森林のない地帯」だと分かります。
Steppe entered English from Russian step', the word for the great treeless plains of Eurasia. Its deeper origin is uncertain. The meaning stayed close to the original landscape image, and later compounds such as forest-steppe kept that idea of a broad open region with few or no trees.
