偽善

本当はそう思っていないのに他人には違う態度を見せかけること。言動が一致せず、他人を欺くふるまいを指す。表裏のある態度や偽善的な行いをさす語。
Hypocrisy is the behavior of saying you have certain moral standards or beliefs but not acting according to them. It is often used when someone criticizes others for something they also do themselves. The word has a strongly negative meaning.

hypocrisy はギリシャ語 hypokrisis「演技・役を演じること」に由来し、もとは舞台で役を演じ分ける感覚の語でした。hypocrite や crisis も同じ krinein 系に触れる語で、「内心と別の顔を見せる」ことが偽善になった、と考えると意味の橋渡しが見えます。
