backlog は back「後ろ」と log「丸太」から成る語で、もとは暖炉の奥に置く大きな薪を指しました。そこから「後ろにたまっているもの」の感覚が生まれ、backup や logjam と同じ発想で、未処理分の意味になりました。
Backlog combines back and log. It first meant a large log placed at the back of a fireplace to burn slowly. From that image of something kept behind, it later came to mean work or goods that have piled up and are still waiting to be dealt with.
