gospel の語源・成り立ち Etymology
古英語 godspell（良い知らせ）から。god（良い）+ spell（話・知らせ）の合成語で、ギリシャ語 euangelion（良い知らせ）の直訳。関連語: evangelist（伝道者）、godspeed（幸運を祈る）。「神の言葉」ではなく元は「良い便り」という意味だったのがキリスト教で「福音」となった。
Gospel comes from Old English godspell, meaning "good news" or "good story." It was made as a translation of Greek euangelion, which also meant "good news." Later, in Christian use, it became the word for the message about Christ and then for the written Gospels.
