choirは古フランス語querを経て、ラテン語chorus、さらにギリシャ語khoros「歌い踊る人々の輪」にさかのぼります。もとは輪になって声と動きをそろえる集まりなので、合唱団を指すのが自然に腑に落ちます。chorusやchoralも同じ語根を受け継ぐ語です。

The oldest idea was not only singing, but people moving together in a circle. From that, the word developed into the sense of an organized singing group. Chorus and choral come from the same root.
