教会はキリスト教の礼拝のために建てられた建物です。信者が集まって祈りを捧げたり、礼拝を行ったりする場所として機能します。地域コミュニティの中心として、結婚式や葬儀なども行われます。
A church is a building where Christians go to pray and worship. It can also mean the Christian organization or group connected to that religion. The word may refer to both the place and the religious community.

church は古英語 cirice を経て、ギリシャ語 kyriakon「主の家」に由来し、kyri- は「主」を表します。Scots の kirk や Kyrie も同系で、church が単なる建物名ではなく、もとは「神のものとされた家」だったと見える語です。
Church comes from Old English cirice, from Greek kyriakon, meaning "the Lord's house." Related forms appear in Scots kirk and in Kyrie, from the same Greek root for "lord." The word first pointed to something belonging to the Lord, and then became the usual name for the Christian place of worship and community.
