「synagogue」はギリシャ語 synagoge「集会」をラテン語経由で受けた語で、syn-「共に」+ agein「導く・集める」から成ります。pedagogue や demagogue も同じ agein を含み、礼拝所の名である前に「人々が集められる場所」だとわかります。
Synagogue comes through Latin from Greek `synagoge`, meaning "a gathering" or "assembly." It is made from `syn-` "together" and `agein` "to lead or bring."
