mosque はフランス語 mosquée を経て、アラビア語 masjid「ひれ伏す場所」にさかのぼる。ma- は「場所」、語根 s-j-d は「平伏して礼拝する」で、masjid や sujud を知ると、祈りの所作が建物名になったとわかる。
"Mosque" came into English through French mosquee, from Arabic masjid. In Arabic, the root s-j-d means "to bow down" or "to prostrate in prayer," and masjid means "place of worship by bowing down."
