解説 Definition

A ceiling is the inside top surface of a room. It is above your head and covers the upper part of the space. The word can also be used more generally for a limit, especially in formal or technical contexts.

ceiling は中英語 celynge を経て、古フランス語 celer「覆う・隠す」、さらにラテン語 celare「隠す」にさかのぼります。もとは部屋の上を覆う内張りの発想で、天井が「上をおおって隠すもの」だと考えると意味のつながりが見えます。関連語は conceal です。
"Ceiling" comes from Middle English celynge, from Old French celer, meaning "to cover" or "to hide." That French verb goes back to Latin celare, "to hide." The word first referred to the lining that covered the upper part of a room, and from there it became the usual word for the inside top surface; "conceal" is related.
