floor は古英語 flor に由来し、ゲルマン祖語 *floruz、さらに「平らな面」を表す印欧祖語系へさかのぼります。分解より語幹 floor が中心で、plain や plane が遠い同根。床が「平らに広がる面」だと分かると、建物の階を表す意味への広がりも納得できます。
"Floor" comes from Old English "flor," from an early Germanic word meaning a flat surface or ground. Its oldest sense was the flat bottom surface of a room or space. From that basic idea of a level surface, English later also used it for a whole level of a building.
