A digression is a short part of speech or writing that moves away from the main subject. It often happens when someone adds an extra idea, story, or comment before returning to the main point. It can be useful, but too much digression may confuse the listener or reader.

digress（話が脱線する）に -ion が付いた名詞、とセットで覚えると定着します。会議や授業で、本題を話していたのに急に脇道の説明へそれる場面を思い浮かべるとよいです。頻出は 'Sorry for the digression.' で、「余談でしたが本題に戻ります」の感覚。discussion が「議論そのもの」なのに対し、digression は議論の途中で一時的に本筋を外れること。内容の良し悪しより、「流れが横道に入った」ことに注目する語だと押さえると混同しにくいです。

digression の語源・成り立ち Etymology
digression はラテン語 digressio に由来し、dis-「離れて」+ gress「歩く・進む」から成ります。本筋から「一歩わきへ進む」イメージがそのまま余談の意味になり、progress や congress にも同じ gress の「進む」が見えます。
Digression comes from Latin digressio, from dis- "away" and gradi/gress- "to step" or "go." Its original sense was stepping away from the main path. That physical idea later became the mental idea of moving away from the main subject. The same root appears in progress and congress.
