Irreverence means a lack of respect for people, beliefs, traditions, or institutions that are usually treated seriously. It is often used for speech or behavior that is playful, mocking, or openly disrespectful. Depending on the context, it can sound either humorous or offensive.

irreverence は ir-「〜でない」+ reverence「敬意」からなり、ラテン語 irreverentia にさかのぼる。revere や reverent と同根で、もとの vereri は「畏れて敬う」だから、文字通り「敬う気持ちがないこと」が不敬になる。
Irreverence is formed from ir- "not" and reverence. Reverence comes through Latin reverentia and is related to revere, from Latin vereri, meaning "to stand in awe of" or "to respect."
