解説 Definition
「欠いている」とは、必要なものや期待されるものが不足している・存在しない状態を表す動詞です。能力・資質・物資などが足りないことを述べるときに使います。「lack confidence（自信を欠いている）」のように、主語が何かを持っていないことを直接表現します。
To lack means not to have enough of something, or not to have it at all. It is used for things such as money, experience, confidence, or evidence. The word is common in both everyday and formal English.

lack は中低ドイツ語・オランダ語系の lak「不足・欠け」に連なるとされ、もとは「足りない状態」をそのまま指しました。接辞分解はしにくい語ですが、lacking や lacked も同じ語幹です。欠如が「何かが無い」という静かな穴として感じられる語だと見えてきます。
Lack is thought to come from Middle Dutch or Low German forms like lak, meaning a shortage or deficiency. It entered English with the basic sense of being short of something, without a clear prefix-and-root structure. Over time it stayed close to that simple idea of absence or not having enough. Forms like lacking and lacked are later English developments from the same base.
