centrum はラテン語で「中心」を表し、さらにギリシャ語 kentron「尖った点・円の中心」にさかのぼる。分解すると centr- が中心の核で、central や concentric と同根なので、「円の一点から全体を支配する場所」という感覚で覚えると腑に落ちる。
Centrum comes from Latin centrum, meaning "center," from Greek kentron. In Greek, kentron first meant a sharp point or prick, then the fixed point of a compass, and from that it came to mean the center of a circle.
