酸素のない高温環境で有機物を化学的に分解するプロセス。バイオマスやプラスチックの処理に用いられる。
Pyrolysis is a chemical process in which a material is broken down by very high heat without enough oxygen for normal burning. It is often used when talking about waste treatment, fuel production, or industrial science. This is a technical word mainly used in chemistry and engineering.

"pyro-" を見たら fire/heat 系、"-lysis" を見たら electrolysis などの「分解」を連想すると覚えやすい。つまり pyrolysis は「熱でバラす」処理。burn や incineration のように単に燃やして灰にする感じではなく、酸素をほとんど使わず、プラスチックや biomass を oil/gas/char に分ける文脈でよく出る。combustion と違って『燃焼そのもの』ではない点に注意。plastic pyrolysis, biomass pyrolysis, pyrolysis reactor の形で固めると定着しやすい。
