解説 Definition
電気分解は、電流を流して酸化還元反応を起こし、物質を分解したり別の物質を生成したりする過程です。生成物は元素や化合物などさまざまで、単に化合物がイオン成分に分かれるという意味ではありません。水の分解、塩素の製造、アルミニウムの精錬などで使われます。
Electrolysis is a process that uses electricity to cause a chemical change, often to break a substance into simpler parts. It is commonly discussed in chemistry and industry. The word is also used for a method of permanently removing hair.

electro- は electric, electronic と同じ「電気」グループ、-lysis は「ばらす・分解する」動きを表す語尾として押さえると覚えやすい。electrolysis は直訳気味に「電気で分解すること」。理科で電極に電流を流し、化合物がイオンにほどけていく場面を映像で結びつけると定着する。electrode, electrolyte も同じ electro- 仲間だが、electrolysis は装置名ではなく“過程”そのもの。

electrolysis は electro-「電気」+ -lysis「分解」で、ギリシャ語 elektron「こはく」と lysis「解く」に由来します。「電気で結びつきをほどくこと」が核で、analysis や paralysis の -lysis を知ると、電気分解の意味がすっと入ります。
Electrolysis is made from electro- and -lysis. Electro- comes from Greek elektron, meaning "amber," because amber was linked with early ideas of electricity, and -lysis comes from Greek lysis, meaning "loosening" or "breaking apart." The word therefore meant "breaking apart by electricity." The same -lysis appears in words like analysis and paralysis.
