tabby は中世フランス語 tabis を経て、バグダードの織物産地 al-‘Attabiya に由来します。もとは波状模様の絹布の名で、その縞やまだらが猫の毛並みに連想されて「ぶち猫」の意味になりました。関連語に taffeta があります。
