calico はインド南西岸の港町 Calicut（現Kozhikode）産の更紗布を指した語で、地名がそのまま英語化したものです。布のまだら模様から「三毛猫」の意味も生まれ、同じ由来の語として Calicut や calico cloth が見られます。
Calico comes from Calicut, the old English name of the Indian port city now called Kozhikode. The name was first used for cotton cloth imported from that place. Later, because some of that cloth had spotted or mixed patterns, the word was also used for animals, especially cats, with similar markings. The history is a good example of a place name becoming the name of a product.
