機械と生物の自動制御システムを研究する分野。情報理論と制御システムの応用に関わる学問である。
Cybernetics is the study of how control, communication, and feedback work in machines, living things, and systems. It is used in science and engineering to talk about how systems respond and adjust automatically. The term is more academic and less common in everyday conversation.

cyber- は cyberattack, cyberspace などで見慣れた「コンピュータ・ネットワーク寄り」の語。-ics は physics, economics と同じく「学問分野」。まず「コンピュータっぽい制御の学問」と置くと入りやすい。ただし cybernetics はITそのものではなく、機械や生物が情報を受け取り、反応を返し、ずれを修正する feedback の仕組みを考える分野。robotics より広く、AI よりも「制御と循環」に意識を向けると残りやすい。
Split it into `cyber-` and `-netics`. `Cyber-` gives a computer or control feeling, and `-ics` looks like school subjects such as `physics` or `economics`. To fix it in memory, link it with `feedback` and systems that adjust themselves, not just with general IT.

cybernetics はギリシャ語 kybernetes「舵取り」が語源で、cyber- は「制御する」、-ics は学問名を作る。govern や gubernatorial も同じ「舵を取る」発想の親類。情報や機械を“操舵する学問”と見ると意味が腑に落ちる。
