ギリシャ語 oikonomia（家政術）から。oikos（家）+ nomos（法・管理）で「家の管理」が原義。関連語: economy, ecology（同じoikos語根）。家庭のやりくりから国家の資源管理へと意味が拡大し、学問としての経済学になった。
Economics comes from Greek oikonomia, meaning "household management." It is made from oikos, "house," and nomos, "rule" or "management." The idea first referred to managing a home and its resources, then expanded to the management of wealth and resources in larger society, and finally to the academic field. Related words include economy and ecology, which shares the oikos root.
