Somewhat means to a small or moderate degree. It is used when something is true, but not completely or strongly. This word helps make statements softer and less direct.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
`some` 系の語は「はっきり決めない」感じを共有するので、`someone`（誰か）・`something`（何か）・`somewhere`（どこか）と並べると、`somewhat` は「程度をぼかして、ある程度」という感覚で覚えやすい。`very` ほど強くなく、`a little` よりは少し広めで、断定を弱めるクッション語として使われることが多い。`somewhat difficult`, `somewhat surprising` のように形容詞の前でよく出る。`somehow`（どうにか）とは意味がかなり違うので混同しない。
