economy はギリシャ語 oikonomia に由来し、oiko-「家」+ nomos「管理・取り決め」の組み合わせです。もとは家計の切り盛りでしたが、その発想が国家や社会全体のお金の動きへ拡大して今の「経済」になりました。関連語は ecology, economics。
