経済的に採算が合わないさま。費用に対して利益が見合わないこと。
If something is uneconomic, it costs too much compared with the value or profit it brings. It is often used in business, farming, and economics to describe something that is not financially practical. It can also suggest that using money, time, or resources in that way is wasteful.

まず economic を「経済の」ではなく、日常では「採算がよい・ムダがない」に近い感覚で押さえると覚えやすいです。そこに un- が付いて uneconomic なので、「採算が悪い、割に合わない」。cheap が「値段が安い」、economical が「節約的で効率がよい」なのに対し、uneconomic は「続けると損」という判断に寄ります。It's uneconomic to keep this factory open. のように、事業・設備・方法がコストに見合わない場面で出る語です。
Start from `economic`, which often means practical and cost-efficient, not just "about the economy." Add `un-` and it becomes the opposite: something that is not worth the cost. Think of the contrast `cheap` vs. `economical` vs. `uneconomic`.

uneconomic は un-「否定」と economic「経済的な」から成り、文字通り「割に合わない」を表す。economic はギリシャ語 oikos「家」+ nemein「管理する」にさかのぼり、economy や ecology と比べると、資源をうまく管理できない状態だと理解しやすい。
Uneconomic adds the negative prefix un- to economic. Economic comes from Greek oikonomikos, from oikos, "house," and nemein, "to manage," so its earliest sense was about household management. From that idea of managing resources well, uneconomic developed the sense of not being managed in a practical or cost-effective way; compare economy and ecology.
