unprofitableはun-「〜でない」+ profitable。profitは古フランス語を経てラテン語proficere「前へ進む・役立つ」にさかのぼり、もとは「前進という実り」。だからunprofitableは「前に益が出ない」→「不採算の」。関連語はprofit、proficient。
