白内障
解説 Definition

「cataract」はギリシャ語 katarraktēs「滝・落ちてくるもの」が、ラテン語 cataracta を経て入った語です。kata-「下へ」＋ arassein「打ちつける」に分けられ、激しく落ちる滝や門扉のイメージから、「目に幕が下りる」ような白内障の意味も生まれました。
Cataract comes through Latin from Greek katarraktes, meaning "waterfall" or "that which rushes down." The Greek word is linked to elements meaning "down" and "strike." From the image of something falling heavily like rushing water or a dropping gate, the word was later also used for the clouding of the eye, as if a curtain had come down over it.
