現代英語では、被告人の保釈金について保証を引き受け、手数料を取って保釈手続きを助ける人や業者を指すことが多い。一方、歴史的な文脈では、主人や領主に縛られて仕える身分の人、つまり農奴や債務奴隷を表すこともあり、文脈で判断が必要である。
