peony はラテン語 paeonia、さらにギリシャ語 paiōnia に由来し、神々を癒やす医師 Paiōn の名に結びつけられる。だから牡丹は単なる豪華な花でなく、もとは「治す植物」の気配を帯びた語で、学名 Paeonia や paeony にも同じ根が残る。
`Peony` comes through Latin `paeonia` from Greek `paiōnia`. It is linked to Paiōn, a healer in Greek tradition, so the flower’s name originally had an association with healing rather than only beauty. That older sense still appears in the scientific name `Paeonia`. An older spelling, `paeony`, shows the same root more clearly.
