Pea arose in the seventeenth century through reanalysis of the older English word pease. Because the ending of pease sounded like a plural ending, speakers treated it as plural and formed pea as a new singular. Pease came from Old English pise, ultimately through Latin pisum from Greek pison. The scientific plant name Pisum preserves another form from this older history.
