linenは古英語linenに由来し、lin「亜麻・麻布」+ -en「材料の」を含む語で、原形はラテン語linumやギリシャ語linonにさかのぼる。lineやlinseedも同根で、糸や布の基本素材だった亜麻が、そのまま布地名になったとわかる。
Linen comes from Old English linen, based on lin, meaning "flax," with the suffix -en, often used for material. It goes back further to Latin linum and Greek linon, both meaning "flax."
