ラテン語 ritus(宗教的慣習、儀式)が直接の語源。印欧祖語で「数える、秩序」を意味する語根 *re- に遡るとされる。同根語に ritual(儀式の)やrite of passage(通過儀礼)がある。「正しい手順を踏む」という秩序の概念が宗教儀式の意味に発展した。
