「distance」はラテン語 distare に由来し、dis-（離れて）+ stare（立つ）で「離れて立つ」が原義です。distant や state も同じ語根を含み、名詞では二つのものが離れて立っているあいだの隔たり、つまり「距離」を表します。
Distance comes from Latin distare, combining dis-, meaning "apart," and stare, meaning "stand." The image of standing apart explains the space between two things.
