parathyroid の語源・成り立ち Etymology
parathyroid はギリシャ語 para-「傍らに」+ thyroid「甲状腺」から成り、thyroid 自体は thyreos「盾」+ -oid「〜の形の」に由来します。つまり「盾形の腺のそばにあるもの」という名で、位置と形がそのまま意味になっています。thyroid や parathyroidectomy も同根です。
"Parathyroid" comes from Greek-based parts: "para-," meaning "beside," and "thyroid." "Thyroid" itself comes from Greek "thyreos" meaning "shield" and "-oid" meaning "like," because of the gland's shape. So the name originally meant something beside the shield-shaped gland.
