footings は古英語 fot「足」に由来する foot に -ing が付いた語で、もとは「足場・足の置き場」の感覚です。foot や foothold、さらに pedal も遠い同根で、建物の基礎が「足元」と呼ばれるのは支えの発想そのものだと分かります。
