Rekindling is the act of starting something again after it had become weaker or stopped. It is often used for feelings, relationships, interest, or conflict. The word suggests that something old becomes active again.
Start with `re-`, which often means "again." Then notice `kindle`, like "kindle a fire." So `rekindling` is the image of a fire starting again, often used for feelings, interest, or tension that had become weak before.
The rekindling of their friendship brought joy to both of them.
There has been a rekindling of interest in traditional crafts among young people.
The couple's rekindling of romance surprised everyone who knew them.
Rekindling is built from re- meaning "again" and kindle, meaning "to set on fire." Kindle comes from Old Norse kynda, meaning "to light" or "to make burn." The word first referred to lighting a fire, then was extended to feelings and interest, so rekindling means making something burn again, either literally or emotionally. It is related to kindled and kindling.
