Permanency is the quality of lasting for a long time or not changing. It is used when talking about jobs, homes, legal arrangements, or conditions that are meant to continue. It often contrasts with something temporary or short-term.

permanency は permanent に -cy が付いた語で、permanent はラテン語 permanere「最後までとどまる」から来る。per-「通して」+ manere「とどまる」なので、「ずっと残り続けること」がそのまま永続性になった。同根語に remain、mansion。
Permanency comes from permanent with the noun ending -cy. Permanent goes back to Latin permanere, meaning "to remain through" or "to stay to the end," from per- "through" and manere "remain." The idea developed into lasting continuously without change. Remain is from the same root family.
