verb 動詞人々を恐怖や強い圧力で慌てさせ、十分に考えないまま特定の行動へ駆り立てることをいう。stampede someone into doingの形でよく使われ、集団そのものが暴走する既存の自動詞用法とは異なる。

Stampeding means running or moving forward in a wild, uncontrolled group. It is often used for animals, but it can also describe crowds of people or a sudden rush of activity. The word suggests speed, panic, and a lack of control.
stampede を知っていれば、その進行中が stampeding。まず stamp の「ドンドン踏み鳴らす」感覚を足場にすると、群れや群衆が恐慌状態で地面を鳴らしながら一気に押し寄せる絵が浮かぶ。単なる run や rush ではなく、集団がパニックで制御不能になって雪崩れる動きが核心。cattle stampeding, crowds stampeding のように、恐怖・驚き・混乱が引き金の場面とセットで覚えると定着しやすい。
Build it from `stamp`, which gives a strong image of heavy feet hitting the ground. In a `stampede`, many animals or people move in panic, so `stampeding` feels loud, fast, and out of control. Remember common pairs like `cattle stampeding` or `crowds stampeding`.
The cattle were stampeding across the plains.
牛の群れは平原を暴走していた
During the panic, crowds were stampeding toward the exits.
パニックのさなか、人々は出口に向かって殺到していた。
The stampeding herd caused significant damage to the farmland.
暴走する群れは農地に大きな被害を与えた

stampeding は stampede の進行形で、語源は米西語 estampida、さらにスペイン語 estampar「踏み鳴らす・打ちつける」にさかのぼります。牛や群衆が地面を鳴らして一斉に突進する感じが核で、stamp も同系なので、暴走の勢いが音から伝わる語です。
Stampeding comes from stampede, which English borrowed from American Spanish estampida. It goes back further to Spanish estampar, meaning to pound, strike, or make a loud impact. The word first suggested a noisy rush of animals striking the ground, and later came to mean any wild, sudden mass movement. It is related in sense to English stamp.
